The thing coming at me barreled out of the trees, leaping from shadow to shadow.

Its rotten-meat smell drove me back. It didn’t hesitate before it threw itself at the circle shield. Sparks flew off, crackling in the air and weakening the shield. It kept coming, like the crazy it was, slamming itself into the arc, weakening it more and more until one of the impacts threw me back, into my own energy and through it.

Okay, out of protection here. I threw myself over to land on my knees and came up in a crouch.

The ghoul looked around as if it couldn’t figure out where I went. When it saw me, it let out a snarl and flew toward me. I sent a stream of earth fire at his sorry ass but missed because I levitated at the precise moment I let the stream of fire loose. Ahhhhh.

It always happens at the wrong time. If I ever get control of the flying thing, it will be so great.

Now the darkling was truly confused, and I sent another tiny but forceful fire stream toward him. This time I didn’t miss, and he burst into flame, at least his arm did.

He screamed with frustration because he couldn’t see where I was, flailed around a bit, and ran back into the trees.

“Damn it.” I needed down before the hell dog came back so I could get rid of it.

What if some kid came along. Not one child but several, in a group, with a leader came skipping toward the bridge. Damn, I shouldn’t have had that thought out-loud.

“Go back,” I yelled as loud as I could. “Hurry. Run.” The kids were chattering at the top of their lungs. The leader tried to push them faster, wanting out of the park before the sun set altogether I guessed. They didn’t hear a word I said.

Shadows crept toward them, and one shadow moved away from the others. It was back and heading straight toward the kids.

“Up here, idiot. Leave the kids alone. I’m your prey. Come on, use that one cell you have for a brain.”

“Oomph.” I dropped like a dead fairy, directly in front of the thing. I was toast.

Bellvara's Sienna and Friends Chat with Author Jessica Slater

Once again I'm happy to welcome to my little corner of the world author Jessica Slater. Instead of me doing the interrogation...I mean interviewing, I decided to turn the blog over to Jessica so she can get a bit more background for our readers from the characters of her book Bellvara. So sit back, relax and let Sienna and her friends tell a bit of their story.~Tammy

What was going through your mind when your mother was kidnapped, Sienna?
I was beyond scared. I knew my mother and I never had a stable relationship but she was the only family I knew. I had to save her no matter what the cost. Everything happened so fast and I just couldn’t understand why someone would want to kidnap my mother. Why did they want her? It all made sense in the end though.

Riley, what were your thoughts when you first met Sienna?
I first met Sienna when I went to get some lunch at the pizza parlour. The first thing I noticed when I walked in the place was her. She was beautiful and in a way I felt drawn to her. The first time we talked to each other was the time right after she fell over and I caught her in my arms. I knew in that moment I had to get to know her.

Tamelia, what made you want to be a part of the adventure?
Everybody took me for a shy, weak girl and I wanted to prove to them that I was so much more. I could sense something was up with Sienna. We never talked before that day but I had a feeling something was going on. I felt she was in danger so I scried for her. Sure enough she was in danger. I thought to myself that she could use someone with my knowledge of the monsters and beasts in the forests as I knew she was heading there when I scried for her. So I did what I had never done before. I just walked up to her front door and I invited myself along on her adventure.  Of course she was hesitant at first, but once she realised I would give her a good advantage, she said I could tag along.

Ella, what does it mean to be a Varwin?
A Varwin is a beautiful, radiant creature in the form of a human. Even though we have the form of a human we are said to have way more beauty then the average person. A Varwin has certain types of powers (which will be explained more on our second adventure). We have the ability to turn invisible when we sense evil. We are flexible and can jump very high and we also have very good balance. But the biggest power we have is making time standstill. This power is a rare one and hard to use as it takes away so much energy and power. To be able to pull it of you’d have to be a strong Varwin and of course you’d have to know what you were doing because if one thing goes wrong, one step, you could die. I am proud to be a Varwin and hopefully one day I’ll have the guts and strength to try bringing time to a standstill…we’ll see.

Eric, what made you follow the others into the forests?
When I spoke to Sienna I knew something was up. She is bad at keeping any kind of secret. Even though things between Ella and me weren’t going so well, I knew if they were in danger I would never forgive myself if something were to happen. So I followed them and when the time came I revealed myself.

What was going through your mind when you found out who your father was, Sienna?
There was so much going through my mind. I couldn’t believe who he was. How I came to find out about him was an even bigger shock. My feelings were scattered and all over the place but now I’m glad I finally know. The question of who he was no longer haunts me.

What was it like to see the beasts you learnt about your whole life, Tamelia?
It was definitely scary. I have never been a powerful witch. I’ve always been book smart but never good at the practical side. My father taught me all about Bellvara’s beasts and how they are very similar yet different from some of Earth’s creatures. I had been learning about them my whole life so to see them up close was definitely horrifying because I knew everything they could do. However, once I got over the initial shock of it I swept right into action, helping my friends bring them down.

Eric, what was going through your mind when you found out what Ella did to you?
I never expected her to do such a thing to me especially since we had been together for such a long time. But she did, and I can’t change that. I’ll always remember it and of course it will always hurt but I had to move past it.

Sienna, what was it like going through the experiences of your dreams?
I didn’t know what was going on when I was having weird dreams. I didn’t know where I was or who I kept seeing but every time I went further into a dream, I would learn a little something new. Eventually, it got easier to deal with and I started to look forward to my dreams.

In your opinion, what was the scariest moment of the adventure, Ella?
The scariest part was definitely when our adventure was nearing an end. None of us knew what to expect, and we knew the worst was yet to come. It was very scary not knowing what we were walking into. When we came face to face with the evil that kidnapped Sienna’s mother, we knew everything we went through before that moment was a piece of cake. Nothing could have prepared us for everything that happened, but we took it each step at a time and basically just winged it and hoped we’d get out alive.

Intriguing. Sienna and her friends gave just enough information to make me want to find out more. I've got my copy of Bellvara. Do you? Well, what are you waiting for? Click on the link and get yours today!

Saturday Spotlight is on new author Jessica Slater

Welcome once again to Not Enough Time in the Day and our Saturday Spotlight. I'm excited to introduce you to a new author from Australia, Jessica Slater. She's just released her very first book Bellvara. It's a fantasy/paranormal novel about Sienna, a 16 year old girl searching for her kidnapped mother. The girl is only half human, with the other half that of a witch. With the help of her light Elf boyfriend and three other friends, Sienna must travel deep into the forests of Bellvara, uncovering more of her own past in order to find out who kidnapped her mother.

Let's find out a bit more about Jessica and her writing, shall we?

What inspires you to write?
I think what inspires me to write is a lot of different things. My mother is a big inspiration for me as she writes books as well and her writing, as modest as she is, astounds me. My past is also a big thing that inspires me. I had a pretty bad past and I always thought it helped to write poems but then the poems turned into books as I got older.

Are you a plotter or panster or a little of both?
I am definitely a bit of both. I do plan every detail of what I want to write and what I want my chapters to entail but sometimes the characters take over and want to change things.

Do your stories tend to be character driven or plot driven?
All my stories are driven in different ways. For Bellvara I believe it is more plot driven then anything.

Do you listen to music while writing? What kinds of music work best for you? Do different types of music help you for different types of scenes?
I am usually one of those people who can’t listen to anything while I write or read. If I do I tend to read sentences over and over until I get frustrated. However, on the rare occasion I can listen to music while writing and I tend to listen to Megan Nicole (a youtube artist), Christina Grimmie (another youtube artist) and Taylor Swift (who I have just recently started loving).

Tell us about the different types of characters you like to write about? Why are these types so appealing to you?
Well in Bellvara, I've made Sienna (the main character) a strong 16 yr old who still loves being rescued on the odd occasion. She has more strength and power than any of the other characters' but she loves being cared for also. This appeals to me because I believe I am somewhat like this. I have so much strength from my past that I am an independent type of person' but I also love having caring people in my life who are always there for me.

In what ways are your characters like you? In what ways are your characters not like you?
I actually didn’t think about it until presented with these questions, but Sienna is a lot like me' and I believe her trying to find her mother is kind of me trying to find the relationship with my mother that I lacked when I was in school. Don’t get me wrong me and my mum are close and I love her to death' but I think my relationship with her now is a whole lot better than when I was younger.

What are the recurring core issues in your stories? Why do you think you are drawn to these types of characters/plots again and again?
I always tend to write about romance and family. I believe I am drawn to these types of stories because it is what is most important to me and due to my past experiences I have learnt family is the most important thing. Romance comes a very close second.

What are your favorite fiction genres to read from?
The genre that I read the most is definitely Fantasy. Other than that I like Horror, Mystery, Romance, Historical Fiction and Young Adult novels.

What are your favorite non-fiction genres to read from?
I don’t read a lot of non-fiction books but when I do it is mostly history books. I am a sucker for modern history, learning about the wars, the great depression and other stuff like that just excites me. I am actually at university majoring in Modern History.

Who are some of your favorite authors and why do you think they appeal so much to you?
I am a crazy fan of Richelle Mead, she is my favourite author, and I’d do anything to meet her. I also love Lauren Kate, Cate Tiernan, Kim Wilkins, Jessica Sorensen (who is a fellow self-published author) and Julie Kagawa. I think they appeal to me because there books are so different from any other. Sure they have witches and vampires and stuff like that but their storylines are just so captivating and different.

What kinds of stories are your comfort reads when you are sick or feeling low?

Definitely something like Richelle Mead’s ‘Vampire Academy’ books or even Cate Tiernan’s ‘Wicca’ Series (that I have read about 10 times).

Who is your favorite all time heroine? Why do they resonate so well with you?
My favourite heroine would have to be Rose in Richelle Mead’s ‘Vampire Academy’ books. She is such a strong character and always cares for others above herself. I think of myself as this kind of person, I always prefer to put others above myself.

Who is your favorite all time hero? Why do they resonate so well with you?
Probably a silly one but definitely Batman. I love the fact that he is just a man. He has no super powers or anything special like that, he just uses his riches to pay for all these different things so he can go out and save Gothem without anyone knowing who he is, which shows he is a man who wants to protect his home and doesn’t care if he gets the credit for it or not. I believe that kind of person is a true hero.

Who inspires you and why? (loved ones, friends, authors, public figures, historical figures, actors, teachers etc)
There are many people who inspire me all the time. My mum is a big inspiration to me with all her fantastic writing, Kim Faulks is also inspirational as she helped me get my book out there and helped me self-publish it. Richelle Mead, Lauren Kate and Cate Tiernan are all a big inspiration to me. I read their books and want my books to be just as good. Another person who is a big inspiration is my modern history teacher from last year. She always knew I had it in me to succeed and she kept pushing me. The biggest inspiration of all though is definitely my boyfriend, Luke Fuller, without him I woud never have finished ‘Bellvara’ and I never would have written Life Shifted.

What inspires you and why? (Art, poetry, music, movie, book, etc. Please share something specific if you like.)
Music is a big one. I love listening to different music and getting lost in the songs. I definitely get inspiration from books and movies as well. Richelle Mead and Cate Tiernan’s books helped me write Bellvara. They inspired me to write that kind of genre.

Besides reading and writing, what activities do you enjoy in your leisure time?
What’s your day job? Do you like it? Why or why not? How has your job affected your personal development? How has it affected your writing life?

My biggest enjoyment is modern history. Every time I read something new about history I get excited. I am in university at the moment majoring in Modern History and English and also studying to get my teaching degree as I want to be a high school teacher. I don’t have a job at this time in my life as I have made university my top priority and am studying fulltime. History has definitely helped me with my writing as well.

In one or two sentences, give the core premise behind your story.
Bellvara is a story about family dramas and what a person is willing to do with the right motivation to save the people they love.

When and where does your book take place?
My book takes place in a completely different world. The world is a magical place called ‘Bellvara’ and although Earth does come into the book, Bellvara is the main world. My book is most definitely in the present time.

How does the time and setting weave into the plot and persona of the characters?
Well Bellvara is a magical place and all of its inhabitants are magical in one way or another. Magic plays a big role in this storyline and I try to give it a more modern setting.

Who is the heroine?
The heroine is a strong and determined half witch named Sienna who will stop at nothing to ensure the people around her are safe. She sometimes has a playful side but most of the time she is serious and ready for anything.

What drives her?
What drives her the most is her never knowing who her dad is and her mother getting kidnapped. Sienna drops her life to try to find and save her mother. Although they didn’t have the best relationship, she would do anything to protect the only family she knows.

What is she running away from (literally or figuratively)?
I guess in a sense she is running further and further away from her past. From the bad relationship she had with her mother mostly.

What obstacles will she encounter in this story?
This story has a crazy amount of obstacles that Sienna and her friends (who accompany her) have to get past in order to save her mother. They must go deep into the forests of Bellvara which is crawling with all sorts of terrifying beasts. Another big obstacle for Sienna is the dreams she has throughout the book, figuring out what they mean and who is in them.

What draws her to the hero in this story? What gives her that push away from him?
Sienna is the heroine in this book but she is drawn to a good looking light elf named Riley who does save her in some circumstances.

What does she need to learn to make the happy ending possible?
She needs to learn how important family really is and that no matter what family comes first.

What about her will make readers sympathetic to her?
Probably the fact that she never knew her dad. That is emotional for her because she always wonders who he is and what he is doing. And the fact that she has an estranged relationship with her mother makes it worse.

Is there a villain? Who is he? What’s he like? Why is he/she the way they are? What motivates him/her to cause oppositional force to the characters?
Without giving any spoilers, can you give a hint as to what sort of opposition he/she gives to the main characters? In my book there are actually two villains. I can’t really say too much without giving it all away but these two people play a big part in her life. There reasons for kidnapping her mother come at the end of the book so I can’t really say anything.

What is the theme at the heart of your story?
The theme of my story is finding out what it truly means to be a family.

What message do you hope readers take away from this story?
The main message I want readers to take away from this is that even if you don’t have a strong relationship with your family they are the most important people in your life and would do anything for you.

Is this book a part of a series?
This book is a part of a 3 book series. The second book in the Bellvara series is still in Sienna’s point of view but focuses on Riley a lot and his past. I have never released the name so here it is for the first time: Snake of the Elves.

What are you working on now?

I am working on the second book in the Bellvara series at the moment and also a completely separate book. It is set in Roman times and it is called ‘Last Touch’. I have also just finished my second book called ‘Life Shifted’ which is loosely based on my experiences with my boyfriend and our past.

What’s coming soon?
In around 2-3 weeks I will be releasing ‘Life Shifted’. ‘Last Touch’ will probably come next year some time as will the second book in the Bellvara series.

Thank you so much Jessica for joining us today. I hope you stop in again soon to share more of your work. ~Tammy

The Spotlight is on The Vampire From Hell

Welcome to our Saturday Spotlight here on Not Enough Time in the Day. As promised, author Ally Thomas returns today to shine the spotlight on her newly released volume series The Vampire From Hell (Parts 1-3). It's available in both ebook and print formats. If you click on each of the covers below, you will be taken to the site to purchase your particular format choice. So now that the "bookkeeping" is out of the way, let's learn a bit more about this series from Ally herself.

ebook format

In one or two sentences, give the core premise behind your story.

The description I wrote for the first part of my series, The Vampire from Hell sums it up best. Rayea is the oldest daughter of Satan and she feels the origin of vampires started in Hell, and it started with her. Rayea isn't daddy's little girl, even if he is the most powerful fallen angel around. He wants her to take an active role in the family business. But she's not interested in his schemes for world domination. Instead she wants to spend her time shopping on the Internet, rescuing humans from a horrific eternity, and practicing martial arts with her seven foot hellhound. Then one day everything changes. She's turned into a vampire by her father.

What is she running away from (literally or figuratively)?

Rayea is really running from her definition of who she sees herself as being when she is with her family. She loathes her father, Satan and her sister, Stephanie because they are just not nice people. Rayea wants to define who she is as a person and a vampire and move on.

What is the theme at the heart of your story?

For me, the theme is overcoming one's obstacles no matter what they are.  It's about having the confidence to step forward, accomplish what you want to accomplish, even if you aren't sure at the moment that you can succeed, but still trying and ultimately realizing your potential or your dreams.

In the Vampire from Hell series, Rayea struggles with letting fear affect her and becoming a confident person.  She's quite capable as a vampire to defeat her enemies, but sometimes she has her doubts in her skills. She doesn't trust people very easily because of her past. She struggles with opening her heart up to love and finding someone she truly wants to be with, so "living happily-ever-after" is going to be quite a feat for Rayea if it does indeed happen for her.

Print format

What message do you hope readers take away from this story?

It may sound grandiose, but really it comes down to " don't let fear stop you." If there is something you want to accomplish in your life, set your sights on it, don't take no for an answer, and go for it. That's it. That's what I want readers to take away from my stories, especially this series, the Vampire from Hell. It's the whole reason I'm now writing.

I struggled for many years to write. I wanted to write vampire stories, but I just didn't think I had anything to say that anyone would want to read. I struggled with a lot of self-doubt. I didn't trust in my own abilities. Finally I threw caution to the wind in September 2011, took a short story class, wrote a twenty-page short story that became "The Vampire from Hell (Part 1) - The Beginning," and got it published.  When I offered it as a free download on Amazon and saw how many times a week it was being downloaded and got emails from readers saying they wanted to learn more about Rayea's story, I decided to step into the writing arena and go for it.

What inspires you to write?

Despite still having a full time job writing online lessons for clients, I get up in the morning early and write. That's why this series is being released in installments or parts, so I can keep sending out Rayea's story to readers. When it first started, I wrote for myself. Now I write because I want to share Rayea's story with my readers. They want to know more about her and her adventures, so that's what keeps me going.

Do your stories tend to be character driven or plot driven?

That's a good question. I'm not totally sure. I think really they are character driven. Rayea in the Vampire from Hell is driving this story. I sit down to the computer and we have a big discussion about what I want to say and about what she wants to tell her "online friends" as she calls them. She's writing each installment as an article for her blog, so we have to make sure it all lines up together...if that makes sense. :)

What are you working on now?

I'm actually working on a spin off of my current series. I worked in a new character, Grace who Rayea tries to save in "A Vampire on Vacation (Part 3)" that I just released In July. Grace falls for Rayea's ex-boyfriend, Death (he also goes by Demetri) and so things will get complicated for Grace and Demetri as they work on their relationship in this new paranormal romance called Fanged Destiny (Fanged Love #1). It will be out in late September.

Thursday Thirteen with Vampire from Hell author Ally Thomas!

Hello and happy Thursday! Today I have a special treat for you. For the Thursday Thirteen spot, I have authors submit the first thirteen sentences or the first thirteen lines of their book. I thought it would be fun to give you BOTH options from special guest Ally Thomas. Her Vampire from Hell series is very popular with both young adult and adult readers. If you love vamps, you will enjoy this series.

So on to today's feature. First let's look at the first thirteen sentences from A Vampire on Vacation (The Vampire from Hell: Part 3)

Sometimes even vampires have to pay for their sins.  My case is no different than anyone else’s.  Wait!  What am I talking about?  My case is like no other case.  My name is Rayea and I’m probably the only vampire created in Hell.  As far as I know, I’m the only vampire in existence anywhere.  I mean do witches or werewolves or zombies for that matter have to face Judgment Day?  Seriously?  I’d like to find one and ask him.  Yeah, my case is different, and then some.

Being summoned to the Golden Skull Bar in San Francisco by J only adds to my worries.  I’m currently drowning my sorrows with a bottle of tequila.
Why is J sending Death?  Am I really about to die?

Whoa! That reached out and grabbed your attention didn't it? How about we now compare it to the first thirteen lines from Chapter 1 from Ally's website.

Death shows up when people die, or are about to die.  Is it my turn?  Can a vampire forged out of Hell be killed?  Is this part of the ‘greater plan’ as J calls it?  What am I missing?

Immediately the painful memory of the mind meld J gave me during our conversation at Blick’s home surfaces at the back of my skull.  Will dying feel like that?  I visualize my brain turning to a globby mess of orange jello and oozing out of my ears.  “It probably will be a lot like that,” I mutter to myself.

If you're anything like me, Ally has you hooked! Once you start reading, you will have a hard time putting the book down. So check out her links below and get lost in Rayea's world. I promise, you won't regret it!

As a vampire from Hell, Rayea’s life is rather complicated so when she’s given an opportunity to take a vacation on Earth, she jumps at the chance. In the third part of the Vampire from Hell series, Rayea travels to Earth hoping to meet her online friends, leave her disturbing past with her father behind her, and embark on a new future without her meddling family. The Vampire from Hell is a novella series and is being released in installments.

REVEALING OUR DUAL NATURES IN OUR BOOKS

Please welcome our guest today author Regan Taylor as she shares with us her belief that we are all made up of two sides: one light and one dark.  Which wins out in the end depends upon a number of factors.

My most recent release, Her Eyes,  evolved from my beliefs in reincarnation and soul mates and my fascination with cell memory in organ transplants and walk-ins. I also believe we have dark and light sides to our nature. We all have an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other. We have the choice of which side of our personality to listen to. But what if the devil…or even the angel…is telling speaking and we don’t really know which one it is?

I bring those concepts together in Her Eyes and hope my readers can dispel belief that these things could really happen.  As my editor and I refined the story I was also considering my cover. I am so fortunate in both my editor and my cover artist because they both “get” me and are able to immediately see the heart of a story. I wanted a cover that showed our dark and light sides and showed the battle for supremacy we can sometimes undergo with those different aspects of our personalities.

The premise of Her Eyes is a woman wakes up from a transplant to find one of her blue eyes replaced by a green one. More than a mere change in eye color Catherine begins to experience other changes. Her dark side clashes more and more strongly with her light. Skye’s cover conveys that battle. The woman on the cover is two parts of one person. The dark side has hidden depths—not merely her darkened fingernails, but her eyes show the hollowness of her life. The other side reaches out to her darker nature but we don’t know if she seeks to release or embrace it. Above a woman with a green eye and a blue eye looks out to the reader, daring he or she to choose.

If you had a second chance to be with a lost love, would you take it? Would you brave time, space and even death to be with that person? And if they looked into your eyes, would they see the truth of the soul within.

Blurb from Her Eyes

What would you do to be with the one you love?  Would you die and finda a way, any way possible, back to them?

When Frank White married Catherine he took to heart the words “for better or for worse.”  With Catherine he got the worst of the worse, or did he?

After Catherine attempts to murder Frank while he sleeps, much to her surprise, Frank’s dog Win lashes out at her.  When Catherine wakes, something very strange has happened, so strange that even Catherine has no idea what.

Excerpt
Chapter One

An ambulance roared by, its sirens blaring disturbing the quiet that otherwise surrounded the house. The road in front of Catherine White's house went for miles, stretching from a rural section of cattle farms in Greenburg County all the way to the city. The sound of the siren quickly came and went as they rushed someone to the hospital.

Catherine stood and walked to the kitchen doorway to look into the next room to see if the sound had disturbed her husband, Frank. There he sat, morosely swilling beer, trying to pretend she wasn't home. Catherine White hadn't spoken to her husband all day.

What was the point?

They had nothing to say to each other. She heard all marriages went through this phase, where conversation drags and the couple slowly pulls away from each other. If it were only that, she would be fine with it.

The truth of it was she had never shared Frank's goals, dreams, or desires. He never understood that.

Frank wanted their marriage to work.

She wanted her freedom.

Well actually, to be more precise she had wanted out of this farce of a marriage prior to James, her lover of six months, dying in a plane crash. Why he had to go to Spain a week ago was beyond her.

Mourning him would take more energy than she cared to spend on just another man. The dumb ass shouldn't have left her. In the week since he'd died her wish to have her marriage concluded rolled over and over in her mind.

Now there was nowhere for her to go, so she stayed with her husband and wished for someone else. It was her curse. She'd built a safety net in Frank but slowly, irrevocably, that net had changed to a cage.

All that really mattered was having a man. It was the only thing of importance in her life. Not just any man, though. He had to dote on her and think she was the sun and moon. Oh yeah, and he couldn't be Frank.

Not that she expected it to take long to find a replacement lover. After all, Catherine never had to look far for male attention. Ever since that first time behind the bleachers event during a football game it had been easy to attract men who could give her the things she wanted.

So why did I go off the deep end and marry Frank?

She'd have to chalk that up to temporary insanity. Well, that and wanting to show up that unbelievably plain and utterly bland Pamela. Pammie. Ugh. How bland ole Pamela ever made the cheerleading squad was beyond Catherine. But somehow dull and boring ole Pammie made it. The bitch had gotten everything in high school: the top grades, the best scholarships, the squad. The one thing she didn't get was Frank White.

That was the one thing Catherine got.

She smacked her gum and returned to the kitchen table, putting on the last coat of nail polish. She should've had them professionally done, but her last manicurist had tossed Catherine out of the shop after she had innocently flirted with the woman's husband. Jealous, so many jealous women out there, and they made life hard for Catherine. It wasn't fair. She couldn't help being beautiful.

Splaying her wet red nails on the tabletop, she lightly blew on them. Her diamond rings sat in a neat little pile in front of her. Each was a gift from Frank, a trinket of his affection. Some affection. When each nail was dry enough, she added her jewelry, watching it sparkle in the overhead light.

I won?

Eight years later and all Frank spoke of was having children. That and maybe moving closer to his parents. She wanted none of it. And why should she? She was only twenty-five and certainly didn't need the baggage of dirty diapers or crying kids. Frank was too much baggage all by himself.

If only Frank were gone…

She would have the house, the money, and no husband. She wouldn't jump into another set of vows either. For once in her life, she would be free to do what she pleased.

If Frank were gone.

The chilling thought clung to her mind, digging in with a life of its own. She popped the gum in her mouth and thought about it. The act of murder was easy. Over the years, she had watched a dozen television shows about catching killers. There were ways to do it and not get caught. Shoot him then claiming someone had broken into their loving home wouldn't be hard. Playing the sad and devoted widow might be nice.

Catherine felt a smile spread on her face. There would be so much attention. Men and women alike would flock to her to offer their condolences. She could have her pick of men and they could sleep next to her right there in Frank's bed. She might even manage her men two at a time.

On a whim, Catherine went to the bedroom and pulled the forty-five from its box in the closet. Frank had bought it and had taught her to use it for those nights when work kept him late. He called it work. She knew that his evening work meant wining and dining different developers who might be interested in his services. There were occasions when supplies were shipped late or an interstate job ran at night instead of during the day. Let him stay late every day for all she cared.

His little construction company was hardly the glossy enterprise that her friends' husbands held. She had to admit that the hard work gave him a nice body, but one she didn't want touching hers. There wasn't a reason why, at least none she'd ever been able to put her finger on. He was tall, broad-shouldered with thick brown hair and amazing eyes and was really quite handsome. More often than not, he turned women's heads wherever he went.

Frank never noticed.

He just went about his business. Maybe if he would have gone after a few of those women, some spice, some challenge, would have been added to their marriage. But not good ole Frank.

Her mind returned to the task at hand. The pistol had a good grip, and she clutched it, enjoying the weight. It had a rich smell of oil and metal, something unique she never noticed in another object. The cold metal of the silver gray gun reminded her of ice. She supposed murder should be cold, emotionless.

She didn't feel emotionless though. Holding the gun, knowing what she was about to do was euphoric.

Catherine opened the clip and checked the bullets the way Frank had shown her. The man wasn't much good for anything, but at least he had shown her how to load and fire the gun.

There were five bullets. The thing was ready to go with a flip of the safety. She would finally get out of this marriage. How simple it would be, a pull of the trigger instead of long arguments with a lawyer presiding.

She paced to the window and peered out over the yard. Divorce could be an option, if she wanted to be poor and her infidelities brought out for all to see. Strong, silent and stoic Frank would grant her one.

He might even want out of the marriage, too, but his sense of right and wrong wouldn't permit him to make the first move.

No, a bullet to the brain would be more merciful than a long, drawn-out divorce. It would be so easy. After he was dead she would mess up the room, make it look like someone broke in and then call 911 to report an attempted robbery. There had been enough visitors to the house that the police would find other fingerprints, and if they didn't, well, her story would be the intruder wore a mask and gloves.

Catherine went to the hallway, trying to move silently. The door to the den, Frank's room, was open slightly. He'd been sleeping in the den for the last five months. She suspected that he knew about her affairs. He had to. The timing of his move to the den coincided with her meeting James. She remembered the night he came home early and looked her deeply in the eyes before asking if she still loved him. She'd told him yes. She'd lied, not to be mean, but because she didn't know what else to say.

Barely into the room, she heard him breathing low and deep, already asleep. That was life with Frank. Come home, have a beer, go to sleep.

The door swung open slowly, his damn mutt on the floor by the couch. The Shepherd looked up and bared his teeth. That dog never liked her.

I may need to take a shot at him as well.

Frank loved the stupid dog and had named him Winter, although he only called him "Win" most of the time. He'd gotten the dog five months ago, about the same time he found out about her recreational activity.

"Stupid dog," she whispered.

Maybe she shouldn't have said anything because the dog looked at her, watched her pull the gun up and aim it at Frank. For a minute her heart raced in her chest, excitement mixed with fear that he would wake and see her standing there. She didn't want him to know it was her.

Her hand trembled.

She hadn't expected that.

There was a click from the gun as she eased off the safety and started putting pressure on the trigger.

The shot would be close.

She wouldn't miss his head. She drew in a steadying breath, but before she could exhale, Win charged snarling, growling, and pain ripped through her face.
